Hungarian households spent about 322 billion forints (about 1.3 billion euros) on domestic tourism in 2007, which comes to 2.5-2.6 percent of total household consumption, the Central Statistical Office (KSH) reported.

[MTI] Last year about 42 percent of Hungarians took at least one overnight pleasure trip within the country. Spending on domestic tourism was up by 11 percent although the number of travellers was down compared to 2006, KSH noted.

Consumers spent 87 billion forints (345 million euros) on commercial accommodations, 93 billion forints (370 million euros) on food and catering facilities, and 71 billion forints (280 million euros) on actual travel costs, including petrol.

Two-thirds of the trips were by car, while just 17 percent of people travelled by bus and 16 percent took the train.

About one-third of Hungarians stayed with friends or relatives while on the road, and one-quarter stayed in their own vacation homes.

KSH estimated that one-quarter of Hungarians spent at least five consecutive days away from home at least once in 2007.
